Dr. Chalip Joins RST as Head
Dr. Laurence Chalip has joined AHS as the Head of the Department of Recreation, Sport and Tourism and the first Brightbill/Sapora
Professor. He comes to Illinois from the University of Texas at Austin, where he was a professor of Kinesiology and Health Education
and coordinator of the Sport Management Program. Dr. Chalip completed his doctoral degree in the Irving B. Harris Graduate School of
Public Policy Studies at the University of Chicago. His research focuses on theoretical and practical issues in the uses of sport for
policy purposes, as well as policy issues specific to the sport industry. His goal is to elaborate a model that identifies key variables
in the provision and leveraging of sport programs and sport events. At the University of Texas, he oversaw upgrades to undergraduate and
Masters sport management curricula, and developed and implemented a Ph.D. program in sport management. Dr. Chalip is a Research Fellow in
the North American Society for Sport Management, from which he received the Earle F. Zeigler Lecture Award, the Society’s highest honor.
He takes over leadership of RST from Dr. Cary McDonald, who has rejoined the RST faculty.
