Welcome from the Dean

Tanya

After a quiet, and hot, summer, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has come alive with the energy of more than 40,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The halls and classrooms of Huff Hall, the Speech and Hearing Science Building, and Freer Hall are filled with the excited chatter of students sharing tales of their summer adventures and setting goals for the new academic year. The faculty and staff of the College of Applied Health Sciences are more than ready to help our students achieve and exceed their goals.

This year, we welcomed 242 members of the Class of 2015 and nearly 100 transfer students to the College of Applied Health Sciences, increasing our enrollment of new students by nearly a third over last year. We can't predict what the world will be like in the years ahead, but we know that our students have the passion, energy, and desire to address emerging issues affecting the health and vitality of individuals, families, and communities. You’ll see that when we introduce you to some of our new students in this issue of AHS E-News.

Our students are well-prepared to assume leadership roles in their fields because of our strong programs and the rich opportunities we provide to extend and enhance their educational experience. One of these is study abroad. For nearly 30 years, we have offered an international travel/study course that enables students to have first-hand experience comparing our health care delivery system with that of the United Kingdom. You'll learn more about the course in this newsletter.

Our faculty are nationally and internationally renowned scholars who bring their talent, passion, and dedication to their instructional and research activities. One member of our outstanding faculty, Dr. David Buchner, is this year's recipient of the King James McCristal Scholar Award. In this issue of AHS E-News, we'll share highlights from his McCristal Lecture.

All of our degree programs nurture our students' commitment to making the world a better place. And, indeed, alumni of the College of Applied Health Sciences rise to the top of their professions. In this issue of AHS E-News, we announce the recipients of this year's AHS Distinguished Alumni Awards and Harold Scharper Awards, individuals who define excellence in the fields of health administration, rehabilitation, education, law, and business.

The fall will be a busy season for the College. We are excited about the dedication of the new wing of Huff Hall, the Khan Annex, on September 22. Many of you have followed the progress of construction over the last year. This new space houses the Master of Public Health Program, the Center on Health, Aging, and Disability, and research and instructional space. We are also looking forward to this year's Homecoming festivities, which will kick off with our alumni awards program on September 30. As always, we hope you'll join us for our tent party, which precedes the Homecoming football game on October 1. Details on all of these events are in this newsletter.

I look forward to a busy and productive year, and I hope that I'll have the opportunity throughout the coming months to meet many of you.
