Khan Annex Dedicated
Shahid Khan, Dr. Timothy Nugent, Ann Carlson Khan, Dr. Tanya Gallagher
Rain didn’t dampen the high spirits of AHS faculty, staff, and students, and more than 100 guests who attended the dedication
of the Khan Annex on September 22. The Annex, which comprises 24,000 square feet of classroom, research, and conference space, is
named for Shahid and Ann Carlson Khan, whose eight-figure gift led to the naming of the addition as the Khan Annex.
The original vision of what was then Huff Gym called for a central column flanked by a southern wing, which was completed, and
a northern wing that was not. The Khan Annex fulfills that vision, 87 years after the original building opened.
Shahid and Ann Carlson Khan were joined on the dais by Dr. Tanya Gallagher, dean of the College of Applied Health Sciences,
University of Illinois Board of Trustees member Karen Hasara, Dr. Michael Hogan, president of the University of Illinois, and Dr.
Sidney Micek, president of the University of Illinois Foundation. After remarks and a ribbon cutting ceremony, guests were invited
to a reception and tours in the Khan Annex, which the architects hope will achieve LEED Gold Certification from the U.S. Green
Building Council.
The Annex houses the Center on Health, Aging, and Disability, the state-of-the-art James K. and Karen S. McKechnie Laboratory,
and the Linda Ayers Whitney Reception Area, as well as the Master of Public Health Program and Michael Vitoux and Vitoux Family
Reception Area.
